Surf music is filled with legendary musicians such as Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, The Bel-Airs, The Ventures, The Surfaris, and many more. Their hits such as Wipeout, Misirlou, and Mr. Moto captured the San Diego beach scene at a unique moment in time. What’s less known about the late 60s is the intense rivalry on the San Diego beaches between the surfers themselves and the musicians who made them famous. One such surfer - Woodrow “Big Woody” Kahanamoku decided to tackle this rivalry head on by forming his own band and pulled together The ‘Boreds from among his Windansea surfing buddies. With guitarist Corky Clucked, bassist Rusty Mushburger, Buzzy Grommet on drums, and Skip Crest on French Horn, Big Woody in 1969 masterminded one of the most mercurial tours to ever grace America’s Finest City. The ‘Boreds disbanded immediately following the tour when Corky and Skip decided to stay behind in Zona Norte.
